Nuno, is the Japanese word for functional fabric. It is also the name of the renowned Japanese textile firm founded in 1984 by the master textile artist Junichi Arai, who created computer designed woven fabrics for Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo in the early 1970’s. In 1987 Reiko Sudo took over as design director and has kept Nuno textiles at the forefront of contemporary textile design. By merging the centuries old textile skills of small mills with factories having advanced modern day technology, Nuno has been able to continue creating contemporary and innovative textiles that are timeless, durable and functionally unique. Environmentally responsible, Nuno has been committed to reducing waste by up cycling all scraps and focusing on using kibiso, the outer layer of the silk cocoon.
